Born in the city of Jinan in China, as a little girl Hongshu Lei had dreams of becoming a fine artist. Her parents, both artists themselves, took her to museums and told her stories about the art, encouraging her to follow her dreams.
In university, Hongshu pursued architecture as a more “practical” path, but always held on to her dream of becoming an artist. After encouragement from her family, Hongshu moved to San Francisco and completed a Master of Fine Art degree in Painting at the Academy of Art University.
With soft washes of color in the background, combined with dappled light that speaks to her painting expertise, Hongshu’s intimate portraits can take center stage. Her thoughtful pieces capture quiet moments, contemplative expressions, and insight into her own state of mind.
